For decades I've used Yahoo Finance to keep track of my portfolio of stocks and mutual funds. That has now been changed and put behind a paywall. Can anyone suggest a replacement?

Um.... I'm still using Yahoo Finance. Only a few bits are behind a paywall... (I'm guessing you use those parts?).
The Portfolio tracking, editing, etc, is still free. Honestly, the MyYahoo landing page with news headlines, weather, and my portfolio listing is the last thing keeping me using ANYTHING Yahoo related. Were it not for those minor conveniences, I'd have abandoned Yahoo over 10 years ago. If they finally do remove those, I'd be using my brokers online tools.

On the free version, can I enter shares and get market value?

What about the Apple Stocks app? Gives plenty of data.
