Camera, HDMI cables or USB capture device at fault?
#1
I have a Pansonic DMC-GX85 camera. Bought just over a year ago and use it all the time both for family shots/video, and also as a second camera for my professional video shoots from time to time. It is a fantastic camera, great image quality.

Recently, I wanted to try using it as a webcam, or at least test to see if that would be possible. I had previously bought an HDMI to USB capture card (this one: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0779Z...le?ie=UTF8&psc=1 ). That capture card works successfully with a 1080p cheapo camcorder and a really nice 4k pro video camera (outputting a 1080 image). I thought it would work fine with the Panasonic camera as well. I didn't have the right HDMI cable to connect to the Panasonic, so I bought a 2 pack from amazon.

Lo and behold I can't get the Panasonic to send video to the computer. There's at a minimum 3 things at play here--the camera has an issue outputting video (tried at both 4k and 1080 res), both identical cables are flawed in the same way, the capture card doesn't like something about what it's receiving, or the computers I'm trying don't like what the capture card is sending. Because I can use 2 other cameras work with the capture card on these computers, I'm ruling out the computers at least for now. And I'm not convinced there's anything wrong with the capture card, though anything is possible. So, that leads me to either HDMI cables or camera.

Short of buying another HDMI cable (which I could do), am I missing anything here that I should be testing? I'd just like to know who the "problem child" is, so I can resolve the issue.

clay-

i have the gx85. great little camera, right?

but i'm not sure it can live stream.

on this yt vid, it goes through how to livestream lumix cameras.

two concerns immediately pop up: the gx85 may not be on the "approved" streaming list and the beta software described in not for a mac.

i hope i am mistaken.

stay well.

thanks, rob.

In this case, I'm going about using it differently than described in that video. That livestream setup streams using the usb out on the camera. In my case, I'm just connecting an HDMI cable to the camera, in the same way that you might connect it to an external monitor while shooting.

I guess I should just bite the bullet and find an HDMI cable from a different batch/manufacturer than my first ones, as I suspect that's where the issue lies.

Did you try hooking the camera up to a TV (or monitor)? That way you'll know if the camera is outputting something over HDMI or not.

Good idea -- believe it or not, I don't have anything with an HDMI input in the house other than this single capture device :-) My 2nd monitor on my computer is too old for HDMI, and we don't have a TV. Maybe this is a good excuse for getting a new monitor--been thinking that at 13 years, it is probably time. But this Dell just will not quit!
