Text spam ... make it stop!

... unfortunately, the spam hasn't stopped ... if anything, it's now gotten a little worse. I've spoken with AT&T and they say they're going to "escalate" the issue, but of course this being AT&T, that probably means nothing. (According to the tech I spoke with, he claimed that the problem is that someone else's phone has been compromised with a virus or program that is sending out the spam to the contacts, but I don't know how much I believe that.)

So far, the best solution I've found is SMS Spam Filter, which allows you to filter out texts on the basis of a word or symbol contained in the text itself. The message gets filtered into the "Unknown and Junk" tab on Messages. The problem with this is that these messages still show up in terms of the icon on the home screen, so you have to read or delete them to get rid of it.

AT&T used to have a great SMS filter on the front end, accessible to users with a website, but they now seem to have taken that away.

If anyone has any other ideas (short of changing my number, which I'd rather not do for a variety of reasons), let me know...

Edit: one more thing I should have mentioned -- I've enabled the "Filter Unknown Senders" option in Settings > Messages > Unknown & Spam, and that hasn't apparently done anything.

Why don't you just BLOCK the offending numbers on the iPhone itself? That's something I have to do multiple times EACH WEEK. :oldfogey:

Because like I said in the OP, I do block them, but the numbers keep changing. (Though the format of the texts themselves is almost always the same...) I suspect the numbers are spoofed.

Have you tried the other SMS filters on this list?

I definitely tried TrueCaller, and also NoMoRobo and RoboKiller, none of which worked. I haven't tried the others yet, but will do ... so far, SMS Spam Filter is the only one which has worked. (I forgot to mention that I'd rather not have to pay for this ... so I haven't tried the paid ones yet.)

Update -- I tried VeroSMS, that one essentially works the same as SMS Spam Filter, except that it allows you to automatically filter texts that contain website addresses ... and unlike SMS Spam Filter, apparently doesn't transmit your texts to the company for filtering (according to the article).

Unfortunately, it still doesn't accomplish the purpose of not counting the spam text as an actual text, so you see the number on the icon on the home screen. Ideally, I'd like something to intercept and not consider it as a legitimate text.

I might try Hiya next, just for comparison. SMS Shield is a paid app, and I'm trying to avoid that.
