Big Sur's new Preview icon looks like a shaker of salt
#11
Ha, I do the same thing, anytime someone shares their desktop. I look at the icons in the menubar and Dock.

That's an app called Time Out (https://dejal.com/timeout/)

It's kind of a reminder or break-a-habit app that you set to whatever interval you want, and then it takes over your screen at those intervals for a few seconds. I use it only to remind myself to drink some water every 20 minutes. Hydration is the only thing I've ever found to avoid pretty severe restless leg syndrome, and as long as I drink about a gallon of fresh water every day (and a bit of magnesium), I don't get it. And even after decades of knowing this, I can still become completely unconscious to water breaks, thus the need to boink myself over the head with a visual reminder every 20 minutes.

I use the free version of the app, since this is it's only purpose for me.

ugh, what a stupid icon. 99% of peeps have no clue what that is.

It is confusing, and a classic skeuomorphism.
Indeed. Just lose it altogether. Its like they were saying "what if no one gets the icon? Lets add a little something in the corner to help identify it!"

And the 60 year old in the back thought "I know, a loupe! 100% synonymous with photos"

What would they think if confronted with this icon?

I chuckle every time I pull up the app switcher and see Preview now. And then think, "is it tequila time already?"

It's not that far from the current (Catalina) icon. Both have a loupe.

I recognized it as a loupe but, I may have to work at dissassociating it from 'salt shaker'.

That would make them stupid, not the icon.

I don't care.

They don't have to know, they'll just learn that whatever it is, it's the Preview icon.

If they can't handle it, fsck 'em, and let them go Windows.

A magnifying glass is used everywhere by everybody for a ton of things.

It's nice to see something different.

Not to mention that symbolically, a loupe is used for closers scrutiny than a glass.

If that causes a problem for anybody with an iQ over 70, then too bad.

Peeps will get over it, like the iBook and iPad naming debacle.

Or they're idiots.

Tru enough -- but at least it was on top of photo, in the correct position of how you would use it.

New one has you looking thru the side?
