While I understand their motivation, what happens when one is captured and brought back to Moscow for Vlad to show off and use as a bargaining chip?

He already has 3 high profile Americans in jail over there, one held since 2018 I think. The US is not going to hurt Ukraine in order to help an American get home. People understand this, I think.
And these Ukrainians who live in the IS and are going home to fight are not afraid of Putin, they are making that clear.

If the US citizens leaving for Ukraine are captured, they will certainly be pawns whether they accept it or not, they will not be given a choice. And we know how much leeway the public gives elected officials over Americans paraded on television by the Bad Guys.
