I just bought a nice used 2015 MacBook Pro, because it's almost exactly what I need, but it only has 128gb ssd. I may buy an owc upgrade, but in the meantime I'd like to use a SD card. I found these:
https://www.amazon.com/BASEQI-Aluminum-m...=hyprod-20&linkCode=df0&hvadid=309751315916&hvpos=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=13807734165357226935&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=c&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=9029598&hvtargid=pla-361885617057&psc=1&tag=&ref=&adgrpid=67183599252&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvadid=309751315916&hvpos=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=13807734165357226935&hvqmt=&hvdev=c&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=9029598&hvtargid=pla-361885617057
but they're a little spendy for what they are. I also have seen the actual Transcend low-profile SD cards, but they seem to be REALLY spendy. Am I missing any options? I can't have it hanging out like it does, fwiw.

kj,
I'm using one of these in a 2015 MBPr 13" with a 400GB microSD card. It works nicely in conjunction with its OWC Aura Pro X2 1TB internal SSD. However, I have heard adapters can cause sleep issues. I've yet to have any.
Storage-wise, if you want to replace the internal SSD, the OWC Aura Pro X2 is an option. You can also use a Sintech adapter and a standard NVME M.2 SSD. There are posts about the Sintech-stick combo in the forum. I did one job with that combo for a friend and she hasn't had any issues with her machine. Might need to be running High Sierra or Mojave for either upgrade. My machines are running Mojave. Same goes for my friend's machine.
Another caveat. I've heard Apple-related firmware updates require an Apple SSD be installed in the machine. I did all updates prior to upgrading my MBPr with the OWC aura. Did the same for the machine I upgraded for my friend.

That's good to know. I'll probably just grab that and a SD card. I don't end up using that much space usually, so it might be all I need. I read about the sleep thing, nice to know it isn't necessarily a prob. What brand SD card do you have? I was thinking the Samsung EVO select, since it's cheap.

FYI--I have one of those in my 14" MacBook Pro and the exact model works perfectly. I tried 5 different models until I got the correct one.

Congratulations!
I'm with Robert- it's pretty easy to put a new NVME SSD in those-I've done it half a dozen times. You can buy a used Apple SSD on eBay; make sure you get a four-lane one, for speed. Or you can buy a non-Apple and an adapter-put a TB in there for about $100!
I did need to reinstall the Apple SSD for upgrades to the OS, but I only do that once a year or so, and it doing the swap (new out, old in, old out, new in) takes maybe half an hour. I don't screw the back on while the os is updating.

Anon,
I suspect you had to put the Apple SSD back due to firmware updates or Full OS upgrades. I’ve had no problems with OS and security updates with the OWC drive in my machine. It remains to be seen if I’ll have to put an Apple SSD back into my MBPr when I do a full OS upgrade to Catalina or newer.
