Bill Barr defends FBI search of Trump’s Mar-a-Lago: ‘They were being jerked around’

Bill Barr strongly defended the Department of Justice’s handling of the top secret documents case against former President Donald Trump, saying that the feds were being “jerked around.”

The conservative former attorney general said on Friday that the evidence suggests that authorities took every reasonable step to recover the top secret documents before obtaining a search warrant.

“The facts are beginning to show that they were being jerked around,” Barr said on Fox News. “How long do they wait?”

Barr shrugged off the claim by MAGA apologists that the FBI should have avoided searching Mar-a-Lago because no former president’s home has ever been searched.

“People say this is unprecedented,” Trump’s onetime close ally said. “Well, It’s also unprecedented for a (former) president to take all this classified information and put them in a country club, okay?.”

The onetime top law enforcement official’s interview amounts to a powerful vote of confidence for the actions of current Attorney General Merrick Garland in the Mar-a-Lago case.

Even though Barr has already broken with Trump, his backing of Garland is a body blow to Republican efforts to paint the search as the work of out-of-control partisan Democratic prosecutors.

Barr even said he believes prosecutors have far more evidence that Trump was seeking to thwart the probe than the public knows.

“How raw is the evidence of deceit and obstruction?“ Barr said. “I personally think for them to have taken things to the current point, they probably have pretty strong evidence.”

Barr mocked Trump’s absurd claim that he had issued a blanket declassification order for all the documents, no matter how secret or sensitive.

“That would be such an abuse,” Barr said, shaking his head in disbelief at his ex-boss. “It would show such recklessness. It might be worse than taking the documents.”

sorry, Bill. It won't make up for all the other stuff you did

see the whole conversation in context - Barr doesn't hold back. Very matter-of-fact-ly eviscerates Trump. That poor blonde must have had all kinds of screaming in her earpiece.

Maybe they should ask Jeff Sessions for his opinion too.

Former Attorney General William P. Barr dismissed former President Donald J. Trump’s call for an independent review of materials seized from his Florida home on Friday — and said an inventory of items recovered in the search last month seemed to support the Justice Department’s claim that it was needed to safeguard national security.

‘ “As more information comes out, the actions of the department look more understandable,” Mr. Barr told The New York Times in a phone interview, speaking of the decision by the current attorney general, Merrick B. Garland, to seek a search warrant of the complex at Mar-a-Lago.

“It seems to me they were driven by concern about highly sensitive information being strewn all over a country club, and it was taking them almost two years to get it back,” said Mr. Barr, who resigned in December 2020, as Mr. Trump pushed him to support false claims that the election had been stolen.
“It appears that there’s been a lot of jerking around of the government,” he added. “I’m not sure the department could have gotten it back without taking action.”

Asked what he thought of the argument for the appointment of a special master, an independent arbiter to review the material that could delay the investigation, Mr. Barr laughed.

“I think it’s a crock of shit,” he said, adding, “I don’t think a special master is called for.” ‘

I'm sure that will come as a shock to him, as the only possible reason he resigned and is taking this current stance is that he thought he'd get off scot-free.

As he's already participated in 45*'s machinations and will be forever associated with same, he probably shouldn't speak out against any of 45's evil, or in support of the FBI.

Just clam up and accept whatever comes his way.

Whatever.

He also said that because the docs were recovered (is he even sure they’re all back??) that it’s not clear if Trump should be prosecuted.

There ya go. With Barr, he’s not so sure prosecution would be warranted because it must be OK to steal if you get your stuff back?
