Moved into the new (old) house, and the previous owners put in a Nest thermostat, but say they never set it up. Now I’m trying to “set it up” and not having luck. I have downloaded both the Google Home app and the Nest app and laboriously entered my router’s password into the thermostat. (!). And it seems to see the network and connect.
In either app, I can “add a device” and choose the thermostat, but I run into roadblocks, like: get a seven digit secret code from the thermostat. (Why? Dunno - that’s just what it says to do next). When I try to, it spins its little circle and eventually says something went wrong getting the code - try again later. Which is what it also says later. Also, I’ve seen several references to the “service”, which looks like it costs $8/mo. (To run my thermostat?). Google troubleshooting is about as helpful as usual: “try moving your router”. :RollingEyesSmiley5:
The furnace is also frequently cycling on/off ~14 min, then off for 4-6 min. This old house doesn’t have a lot of insulation, but the on/off cycling seems excessive.
I’m not looking to do anything fancy - set back temp at night, up during waking hours. Various Google sources suggest if I do this manually enough times, it will learn our pattern. Will it?
So far, I don’t see what the fuss is all about - not worth the repeated data entry, and certainly not worth $8 a month. The previous owner also left behind a Nest smoke detector, which takes 6 (!) lithium AA batteries, and I presume I need to set that up too. So it can send me a text message when my house is on fire, I guess.
Any tips?
