I think I must have inadvertently activated something or rather deactivated as my mouse would move the pointer on the screen but no scrolling or clicking of any kind. Thought it was the mouse to begin with so tried another Magic Mouse but that was the same. I know, drag out an old USB mouse but with the same result, pointer would move but no clicking. I forced a shut down and on restarting everything is working fine so what did I do?

You probably had a dialog/alert appear off-screen. Cant do anything until you click a button you can't see.
Sometimes, hitting the Escape key will cancel/close the hidden window.
