Networking question: hub, switch or...?
#1
I have our ReplayTV hard wired into our Buffalo router. However, all ports on the router are filled (and I don't want to run another long wire) and I want to hook up an Xbox at the same location as the ReplayTV. Can I do this with by simply plugging in a hub or switch? Are there unpowered hubs or switches (so that I don't have to deal with another wall wart?

ive never seen an unpowered switch, but that doesnt there isnt such a thing

you want a switch, if you take a peek on dealmac, i saw a netgear 5 port one for $13 after rebate...

if you are near a frys, you might find one for about the same $$

switches are slightly smarter hubs.

i don't think you'll find an unpowered switch as ethernet doesn't supply power.

just get something cheap.

If ethernet does not supply power...then I have found my million-dollar baby! ; )

(my wireless access points here are ethernet powered)

Ethernet is UNPOWERED, unless you are using devices build specifically to use POWER OVER ETHERNET....

Clear as mud?

What kind are they?

There is Power over Ethernet but its rarely used and expensive. Its mainly for devices in out of the way places.

It is used more than you think. I would not say rare, nor really expensive, either. Of course, compared to the average, standard setup - obviously the numbers are skewed.

My model numbers escape me (too many)...but they are Cisco APs utilizing BlueSocket WLAN Security/Management.

I want wireless power for all my devices! No more plugging in brick adapters and power cords.
