Let's go with a budget of less than $500, screen size of 20"-ish.

Will consider 4:3 or widescreen. Pivoting might be cool.

No USB hubs/speakers/cup holders, etc. necessary ---- just give me a great picture.

Would also consider a used Apple ADC, however I doubt the screen size/cost ratio is there?

Available for inspection at local big box stores is a plus, especially if I can compare it to something else recommended.

At the moment I'm wondering if the Dell UltraSharp 20" might be better for what I want than say, a Dell 20" or 22" widescreen at a similar price if the UltraSharp gives a better picture. On the other hand, if the widescreens are just as good but mainly lack the extra inputs and height adjustment etc. I don't care about that as much. An UltraSharp 24" widescreen would shut me up for a long time but I don't think I can stretch that far ...

Get a dell.

I'd get a 20" over a 22". The vast majority of 22" displays have the same resolution as 20" displays.

Yeah, I've been reading up some, and decided to go with a 20". And that's what I have at work, so I'm already used to it. I think it'll be just fine.

20" and 22" widescreens give you less pixels, and it seems 23" or 24" widescreen might not necessarily give you a stellar 8-bit monitor until you go all the way to Apple's 23" ...

So, I placed an order for a Planar PL2010M after reading a few good things about the company. And the monitor does 16.7 mil colors, so I suppose it's 8-bit. $259 at buy.com:

What's odd is they also have other links to the same monitor at higher prices.
