Help! I need to be able to speak in a southernish accent by tomorrow morning.

Y'all boys hold on a minute: as a true southerner, my advice is FORGET IT! That is, unless you are doing the skit in the midwest, etc., with not too many real southerners in the audience. A southerner can always tell a fake accent, and it really sounds awful, not to mention sometimes a little condescending and demeaning to the south. I know if I tried to do a midwest accent, you could tell I was not a midwesterner.

Anyway, for the skit, maybe a Foxworthy video might help you to listen and practice. I am a linguist, speak Japanese fluently, and suggest listening and repeating until you feel fairly comfortable and natural speaking in our accent... good luck with the skit, I am sure you will do great.

Look at and listen to some Rap Videos.

: )

If you need to know how to curse with a southern twang, especially this one:

Add syllables to words and you'll be fi-ine.

I say it again - NO you won't; just sounds incredibly tacky!!

Just do your best, you are not trying for an award...

One other thing - there is a BIG difference in southern African-Americans talking among themselves and southern whites' speech. My advice for this: do not try to talk like a southern African-American, unless that is what you are needing to do in this skit... And that will sound even worse than trying to copy a white southerner's accent!

So, don't even try to copy the rap talk...

This is the gold standard, used by many famous stage actors over the years to perfect their southern dialect:

Part of the southern accent involves elongating double vowels (dipthongs). Alternately, borrow a copy of Joe Dirt and rip off the accent.
