Workshop Gurus: Recommend a BENCH VISE?
#11
I would much rather support Wilton's few remaining MADE IN THE US brands...
But I can sure understand the temptation to try their chinese line. (like I said, my last 3-4 vises have BEEN chinese...).

Check some machinery supply companies, and see if you can at least find some "made in eastern europe" brands..
Trust me, if you use the vise at all regularly, you will find it FAR AND AWAY more useable if whoever makes it at least knows what a vise is FOR and how it operates...

a vise used is not usually a bad deal.

turns out my next door neighbor had no idea of what to do with a vise, so he dropped off a nice Made in the USA vise on my doorstep. Big Grin

Stopped by HFT to see the vise.

It's is honkin' humongous. Weighs 66 pounds. Nice finishing job on the metal, including the acme screw. The body is finished in blue, either powder coat or epoxy, I'm not savvy enough to determine which.

It's just too big for my purposes.

Thanks to everyone who weighed in, the search continues!

It might be big and heavy but the problem with a lot of cheap Chinese vises is the crappy
cast-iron they're made of. I've seen the whole back stationary jaw just break off. The
cast-iron is a very course grain not like a higher quality vise.
