Can't ftp to home anymore
#1
I used to do ftp://homeip from office with no problem. Not anymore. I am using the ip given by whatismyip.com and ftp access is turned on. I have cycled my Verizon router inthe mean time. Could that be it? Something to do with port forwarding?

When you say "office" what do you mean? Is it your own office that you have control of the internet connection? or is it a company with an IT department?

It is work, university actually.

The IT department may have blocked that port outgoing. A lot of commercial businesses do that ... don't want the employees ftp'ing out all the trade secrets.

Assuming that you're home right now, make sure that your router is set to forward port 21 to the local address of your Mac, that FTP is enabled in your Sharing preferences and that your Mac's firewall is open on that port.

Confirm your WAN address before you go to work tomorrow.

Then try to ftp from work.

If it doesn't work, try connecting to another site via ftp... for example, you should be able to connect to ftp://ftp.apple.com.

If you can't connect to another site then you may reasonably assume that your IT guys have blocked FTP.

BTW: A great utility for checking your WAN and LAN addresses:
