CPU Director v2.3-Is it Mac OS X 10.4.9 Compatible?
#1
Hi all, how's everybody doing today?

I can't seem to raise a human being at OWC Tech Support this afternoon without being on hold for 20 minutes, and I was hoping for an answer to the above from someone here who's running CPU Director in a G4 upgrade of some type from Powerlogix, OWC, NewerTechnology, etc.

I'm running one of the new 7448G4 CPU's in my Digital Audio PowerMac G4, it's the newest of the new, the NewerTechnology G4 1.8GHz DP 7448 CPU, and I'm at 10.4.8 on the machine because I'm afraid to update to 10.4.9 because of CPU Director.Sad

CPU Director is the OWC/Powerlogix/NewerTechnology Control Panel that modulates a 7447A or 7448, or other G3 through G4 CPU's in terms of backside cache enabling & control, enabling Speculative Addressing/Access (for faster CPU response in certain situations), DNP (Dynamic Power Management) for when you're letting the Mac loaf when it doesn't need full CPU Power, and most important for those of us using the higher end CPU's, Thermal Management...ie you can see how how things are with the on-die temperature sensor on my CPU's, and if the CPU's are overheatiing, or acting normally, whatever.>Big Grin<

Anyway, it's a really cool utility, but every update to OS X seems to "break" (td)the previous version, and then we have to wait for OWC/NewerTech to issue a new variation, and I quite frankly LIKE CPU Director's Thermal monitoring so much that I don't want to lose its functionality EVER with this wonderful 7448 CPU that I have crunching FAHome proteins 24/7, and doing light production work for me to boot.

So does anyone know, for sure, if v2.3 is going to get BROKEN if I apply 10.4.9 to the G4's boot HD, like usual, or is this one good to go with the 10.4.9 update?

The updates have up to now always BROKEN the Director, so I won't be surprised if the answer is affirmative. But just in case someone out there knows this answer, it would sure make it nice for me, and I could go ahead and update the G4's OS to 10.4.9, which I've been wanting to do for several weeks, just haven't had the time to do so and I do this afternoon if CPU Director won't get axed by the update.

As usual, thanking anyone who knows in advance the answer to this query.(tu)

By the way, it's a B E A U T I F U L Spring afternoon here in SoCalifornia, and I wish everybody could be here with me to enjoy the 78-degree, breezy but nice sunshine and cloud-free day! I've scheduled nothing at all for the next two hours, and I would love to get this update done, if I could, before going back to work again at about 5PM PST.

Kindest regards,

I don't know the answer. I just had to do a reinstall on mom & pops smurf with a G3/800 and took the opportunity to bring them up to date but didn't want to risk running CPU director with X.4.9 so I didn't install it. It seems to be doing just fine without it.

Well, guys and gals, it's NOT (td)compatible with 10.4.9 as the nice folks at OWC/NewerTech/PowerLogix are just waitiing for Leopard to come out before they go through the trouble of re-writing it again...I just got the word from my source inside OWC, who I CAN reach even when tech is too busy to help on a busy afternoon like today.Smileo

So no big deal, I'll just leave the G4 DA machine where it is, it's a happy little thing @ 10.4.8 anyway!(Tongue)

I'd like to thank my contact at OWC, Chris Roberts @ extension #159 for coming up with the answer that saved me a lot of trouble!Big Grin

Kindest regards,

First off - we are here for everyone. I am sorry for any hold time, although I am not aware of times exeeding 5-10 minutes during normal hours.

Regardless... The PowerLogix site has had info about CPUD on the front page linked:
http://www.powerlogix.com/products/cpudi.../1049.html

since 10.4.9 came out.

We are in the process of developing the 10.4.9 update.

CPUD is offered as an OPTIONAL, FREE Utility for Power Saving management of NewerTech G4/7447 and G4/7448 Upgrades. The application is not something we charge for nor guarantee updates for - we simply can not due to what Apple is doing with OS X.

CPUD is not required for use of any NewerTech upgrade. Again, it is an optional use program. It's an awesome feature that it brings as it works with the DFS Power Management our processor upgrades support, something no competitor has to begin with.

CPUD is a PowerLogix application and the only upgrades that require it for operation are some PowerLogix G3 Upgrade products - which, btw, also require Xpostfacto for using with OS X 10.4.x since Apple doesn't directly support.

CPUD did not require updates with each version change of OS X until Tiger 10.4.x came out. Apple then started changing the code space CPUD depends on for enabling the Energy Saver interface in each 10.4.x release change. This was not the case with 10.3.x versions of Apple OS X. What has added to delay is starting with 10.4.8, Apple has been very slow to release the Darwin update counterpart which is used for CPUD dev.

We have made no statement concernign CPUD and 10.5 Leopard as we don't know if it will even be possible with Leopard. We need to wait for the final build version and dive in... As there is no longer going to be a Darwin Open Source release of OS X starting with the 10.5 version, it's a little more complicated to say the least.

Sorry for any problem getting this information by phone today - but the information has been noted on the PowerLogix site where we direct customers to get this optional software and as soon as we have 10.4.9 support, that too will be noted on the site and a release made.
