AppleTV for $213
#1
Just ordered a refurb AppleTV ($249) and used my $50 credit from the iPod battery settlement... Free shipping, should arrive between Wednesday and Saturday; $213.43 for the Chicago area.

So... what's the latest on hacking these puppies into full-blown OS X boxes? I'm definitely going that route; even have a 3.5" SATA 320GB drive I've been intending to use for my first intel Mac... which is what the AppleTV is going to be in my household.

Now I just have to pick up an HDMI to DVI cable... don't think I'm going to be able to plug this puppy into anything except my LCD displays just yet (my household does not have HDTV and we weren't planning to get it...)

Hmm... I'm not sure I want to cross the bridge, here, but... I've successfully completed many a Mac mini (intel) external SATA cable routing. it looks like the AppleTV can run with the bottom removed so I plan to make a custom plate and bolt it onto a 3.5" SATA drive case.

So from what I can tell, you can install OS X (obviously for Intel) on a drive, remove a few files and change out the kernel, then connect the drive to the AppleTV and boot OS X. What's not clear from what I've read is whether other stuff works - wireless, networking? It seems the HDMI port doesn't send sound in OS X, but that's really not a surprise since no currently shipping Mac has an HDMI port.

My plan, if I can get the technology working, is to use this as the wedge to convince my wife to upgrade our 36" Sony CRT TV to a nice 40+" HDTV. Using a miglia or EyeTV HDTV tuner, it might allow us to get rid of cable TV *and* enhance our usage of our existing iPhoto albums; while paying for itself by the end of the year.

LOL!
Use a mass of wires and hacked together junk as a "wedge" to get your to agree to let you buy a new TV?

I agree --- the only "wedge" you might wind up with is a bricked ATV wedged against the door, holding it open for you ...

AppleTV is the hacker's toy of choice right now. Let the man hack!
