The wife wants an iPhone. She also wants to ditch her old Palm. Since I've never had or used a PDA, I have no clue as to whether or not new iPhone = at least as good as old Palm or not.
My guess would be that she could switch from the Palm organizer on her computer to iCal and synch up to the iPhone from there, but what the heck, I've never used iCal for anything other than, er, the calendar. Any thoughts?

I think it depends on what she uses her Palm for. If she just uses the organizer part, then I think it would be fine to just use the iPhone. If she uses other applications written for specifically for the Palm, then she may be tied to that platform.
I've had a Tungsten T for about 4 years now that I use daily. Besides contacts and calendar, I mainly use ePocrates, a prescription drug database. I've been waiting for Palm to release a successor to the T|X for about a year now. If they were to fix some of the problems with that model, I'd buy it the day it was released. Unfortunately, it seems that they have all but abandonded the PDA-only, non-Treo product line. I want to keep using this program but have a cell phone that I'm happy with and don't need a Treo.

[quote Will Collier]So here's an iPhone question... is it a Palm replacement?
That would be cool. Some unfortunate guy is missing a hand. Instead of getting a hook he attaches an iPhone.
Take it off an recharge it while he sleeps. Then watch videos, listen to music, and yak on the phone all day long.
I expect it would be less expensive than some of the other prosthetic choices.

it depends upon how she uses her palm. i have a TX and the iPhone (in its initial release) would not fit the bill for the functions i depend on the PDA for. one factor for me is iCal; the palm desktop PIM software is much more useful for me than iCal so i would dread losing that capability.

Ditto to the "depends on what you use it for." I run PocketQuicken on my Palm--it's a deal-breaker for me to not have it. Otherwise, I'd be thinking about it very, very seriously....

It will be very interesting to see how Apple handles third-party programmers.
They may decide to treat it like a video game console where, in the interest of security, Apple approves and exacts a toll for each third-party iPhone application.

I can't see living without pocket quicken either. it's also nice having a dictionary installed and of course, games. Sounds like the iPhone doesn't even support ipod games. Hmm.

I love my Palm phone (it is ancient but still works) and all the little apps that I use on it.
