Don't be a KoolAid-drinking Mac fanatic. Like Steve Jobs hasn't screwed people over all his life. He denied his first child was his and never paid child support until the courts forced him to: that's a lot worse than being a greedy capitalist. The fact that he later got to know her doesn't erase what a big jerk he was in the beginning.

There is a public and private Bill Gates and even a public and private Microsoft.
There's the Gates that willfully defied all court restrictions and there is the Gates that is about as generous a human being possible. Schools here in Oakland are benefitting greatly from he and his wife's, foundation's small schools initiatives.
Microsoft has been extremely ruthless (not Enron ruthless, but close), yet they were among the first corporations to truly reward productive employees by sharing the largess. Domestic partnership recognition and many other employee friendly features were pioneered at Microsoft.
There are two edges to that sword. I do think he is a genuinely thoughtful person (they also supported Slate.com for most of it's existence). When you've been a company that copied others for a living, you tend to get ruthless. I'm glad he's sharing though.

I guess it just goes to show that Gates is no Millard Fillmore, either.

I don't care what he spends his money on. My dad told me once that he never got a job from a poor man. Nothing wrong with being rich and spending money.
That said, that boat is too damned big. If you want a boat to move around and travel with you need to keep it under a certain size so it can be more easily docked etc. If you want a big friggen luxury house then buy a big friggen luxury house.

Wow, it is interesting to hear that there are still communists around in 2007. Nice post comrade.

Employee-friendly? Is that the same Microsoft that was fined heavily for abusing employment laws in Washington state by denying employees hired through temp agencies (thousands of them) the same benefits as regular employees?
