Help needed with burning Dual Layer DVD+R
#1
I have an iDVD project archive file I want to save off my HD and its about 5.96 GB. I picked up a 3-pack of Memorex DVD+R DL and have twice produced coasters using Toast 6. The file burns completely, but when Toast attempts to write out the rest of the DVD it throws an error message and doesn't write out the disc, making it unusable.

My current setup is a G5 Dual 2.3 Ghz PowerPC with 2.5 GB RAM. System 10.4.9. It has a Pioneer DVR-110D. Per System Profiler, Burn Support is YES (Apple Shipped/Supported) and DVD+R DL is indicated in DVD-Write.

So my next attempt was to simply make a Burn Folder and drop the file in it. I put a new DVD+R DL in the burner tray and repeatedly get an error prompting me to: "Insert a blank disc to begin. This disc will be burned with the contents of "Tom DVD Archive". You will need a disc with a capacity of at least 5.96 GB." The DL blank is 8.5 GB. So how can I get the burner to read this as blank and burn it?

THANKS IN ADVANCE! for any help.

Mr. C,

The first issue is the brand of media. Memorex DVD+R DL is crappy media. I've tried it several times and it resulted in coasters. I wouldn't waste my money on it. The other issue is compatibility. Burners can be finicky. They'll support one brand and type of media but not others. So, it could very well be that the Pioneer may not actually support the Memorex media. So, that could be an issue on top of the fact that it's cruddy media in the first place.

I'd take a run to a OfficeMax or equivalent and purchase a pack of Verbatim DVD+R DL. I've used it with my NEC DVD burner and it's proven itself time and time again. So, it'ls likely to work well in your Pioneer burner.

I had the same type of problem with my MB Core Duo today. Had Verbatim DVD+R DL rejected by Disk Utility when trying to burn a .dmg (Backing up my Tiger discs for the MB, to store in 2 separate locations.)

I can't find and Verbatim -R DL in any quantity other than 3 packs, and that brand is what both of my Macs like, normally.

I agree with Robert M. I've had problems with Memorex and a few others, including TDK.

the real problem is who is actually producing the disc. The name brands usually, but not always, keep an eye on quality control.

Model,

i wouldn't go near DVD-R DL, regardless of brand. DVD+R DL has enough compatibility issues and it's been around for quite a while. DVD-R DL is vastly more problematic in my experience.

For what it's worth, I only use Toast or Popcorn for burning optical media. Definitely more useful and reliable than just Disc Utility. Toast alone is a worthwhile purchase if you don't already own it.
