how to delay a job offer - tactics
#1
well, i've been offered a position with many pros and cons but i'll probably take it based on the title.

question is, i want to negotiate with my current employer. if they do a couple of things for me, i might stay.

what to say to the prospective employer to keep them interested but delay them for a couple of days..?

Tell them you are only using them to gain a better position with your current employer.

"Gee, the job sounds great, but I want to use this offer from you to see if I can negotiate something better with my current employer; that's the only reason I was looking, you know. Give me a coupla days, huh?"

That is the truth, is it not? You wouldn't want to LIE to a prospective employer, would you?

It sure is fun being retired. Smile

Take the Job. Tell new job you need to give a two week notice.

Go to the old job and either tell boss that you have another offer that you have accepted or just give them a written two week notice. boss will ask why. Explain that you like it here except for _____________________. Mention the better pay and better benefits. Boss will either make a counter offer or say good luck.

You must be willing to take the new job.

This has worked for me twice. Once I stayed and once I left.

Yup, that's the way the game is played.

Accept the other offer, resign from your current position and see if your boss wants to keep you.

Of course, that plan of action usually leads to burnt bridges ... and you better be prepared to take that other position if your current boss doesn't want to keep you.

thanks, kurtzie and timg, the real reason for the post is how to delay for one more day. the subject line is really what i'm after, not necessarily what i wrote in the body of the message. ,

i'm planning to see if i can negotiate something better in my current role, but i'm perfectly willing to take the offered position. either position has its pros and cons, as i said.

In that case, just ask them for 1 more day to decide. if they really want to hire you, then they should give you the extra day to decide.

It just seems like you could easily say..

"THanks for the offer. Let me sleep on it a couple of nights and I'll give you a call on Thursday(?) and discuss what's next"

Waiting two days is not a big deal, unless you make it a big deal. Make the abocve statement in a casual, matter-of-fact way... and it's a non-issue.

kurtzie and timg have it right. you have to mentally expect to leave you r current job, and be willing to do so. For all you know, your boss may not be able to make a counter offer.
