Tiger Mail app question

I had a computer with Panther mail. I bought a Mac Pro with Tiger Mail. The transition went basically fine except in Tiger Mail when the Inbox is displayed it insists on putting emails I have responding to above other emails I have received. I don't want that, I want it just like it was in Panther Mail - all received emails in order of the date I received them. The way it is now I have to scroll down through the list of emails I have responded to, to get to new emails that have just arrived. Why would it do that? I have looked all through the menu items but I can't seem to find a parameter I can change to get it to stop doing that. I hope someone knows the answer - it's really bugging me.

Click the Date header in the main message window to sort by date received. Click it so that the arrow is down and new emails will show at the top. You did this in Panther too but forgot about it.

There is a little dot on the far left of the date header that I didn't recall being in Panther's mail and when I clicked on it, it flipped the mail list so the most recent mail went from the bottom of the list to the top - except after doing that, it put the responded to mail above the other mail. So I thought the little dot was what I clicked on to flip the list (which it does but with that weird twist of putting responded to mail on top of other received emails). What is the point of the little dot on the far left of that header?

Message status.

The only reason I know it is because I Control-clicked on the dot which brings up a list of the headers.

I had just clicked the dot, then Control-clicked it and noticed "Message status" was selected. Do the same thing again and select Sort by ... Date received
