The 1 terabyte floppy drive?
#1
Or sort alike one--certainly not floppy. Has anyone here used one of these newish
enclosures from Wiebetech? They are trayfree SATA hard drive enclosures that
claim to be as easy to use as pop a drive in, pop a drive out. They say on their website:
"WiebeTech's TrayFree bays are a breeze to add a drive to. It really is as easy as
opening the door, sliding the drive in, and closing the door. No screws, no trays,
it just works."

I was thinking of getting the 1-bay quad interface enclosure, because it would
make it very easy to do offsite bare-drive backups of stuff from my home studio,
and save money on additional enclosures.

They charge a premium for their bundles with drives, like Apple does with memory.
I'm thinking of getting the one-bay bare quad-interface enclosure, which was $211
+ shipping from Amazon yesterday. I buy OEM drives from newegg or zipzoomfly
usually, as I'm a deal whore like most people here are. I like the quad interface
one because I'd use it primarily with Firewire 800, but the other options are nice
just in case I ever get an eSATA card for my Mac.

I think they used to have a PATA version--they might pop up on ebay or LEM swap lists from time to time.

Thanks for the tip, I may contact them to find out what model numbers I should be on the look out for.

Wiebetech never had a trayless hot-swappable enclosure for PATA.

Macgurus has a drive enclosure that, with the proper tray, can take
PATA or SATA. http://www.macgurus.com/productpages/fir...U6SATA.php

PATA drives probably wouldn't work very well in a trayless enclosure b/c of the molex power connector.

I've got a couple of the trayless Wiebetech SATA units. They seem to work well, although I haven't done a lot of drive swapping with them.

Someone else is also selling a similar unit, can't remember who. I went with Wiebetech, so the price premium must not have been much, if any. Or, it might have been that the Wiebetech unit looked shorter, which I needed for the enclosure I was putting it in.

A quick google pointed to a brand named Startech, which has many trayless
configurations, mostly as backplanes to stuff in a server. Their 5.25" Tray-Less
SATA Hot-Swap Bay is a dead ringer for Wiebetech's similar RTX product:

I wonder who the OEM is.
