Source for replacement iPod drive?
#1
Son's 20 GB Click Wheel iPod is displaying the sad iPod icon. Have gone through the troubleshooting guide at Apple Support, and can not get it to go into disk mode. Just makes the attempt and ten brings up the sad iPod again. Can hear the disk trying to spin up and a series of clicks, so I am thinking the drive has gone bad. Any sources for drives to replace the one in the iPod that you can recommend? For this model of iPod, is changing the disk any harder than doing a battery replacement?

It's as easy as changing a battery.
I've had good luck with an eBay seller called DISI.
They offer a 1 year warranty on their drives, and they are not overpriced.

Great deal this week on the better 20 GB drive, only $37 shipped.

"TOSHIBA 20GB MK2006GAL IPOD HARD DRIVE *LIKE~NEW~SEALED"
MK2006GAL ~ HDD1488
Ultra DMA - 100 (ATA-100) ~ 4200RPM
*The 2006 gives you added reliability over its predecessor, the 2004,
providing you with *TWICE* the shock and vibration specifications!
And don't use a metal screwdriver like on that linked instruction page!

Thanks incog!

I have a 10GB 2G iPod that has been sitting forlornly on my shelf awaiting a replacement HD. For $37 I may be able to put her back on the road... and with double the capacity.

I currently have a 60GB Video iPod, but you never forget your first love...

Those 20 GBs used to go for around $50 with shipping.
I have used DISI on several occasions, never got a bad drive or had a problem.

My thanks to maco and incognegro as well. Will keep these locations in mind. Followed some of the extra suggestions beyonf those on Apple's site from the notpopular link in maco's first post, and the disk is loading again. Will have to wait and see if it holds, or is just a temporary fix.
