What you've been waiting for: MBA take apart and benchmarks
#1
Gizmodo has the first MBA take apart and benchmarks that I've seen. The MBA's battery is really classic Apple over-engineering. It's really something to see. The benchmarks are what you'd expect...generally a tad slower than a MB, except for MP3 ripping which even blew a MBP away. Seems odd with a slower HD, RAM, and Proc.

the big question I have is - how tall is that hard drive?

if 5mm, then 80gb is max capacity

if 8mm, then one could swap in a 160GB 1.8" Samsung for around $200
(slower, runs at 3600RPM)

Doesn't seem like enough screwing for $1,800.00.

Did I miss it ?
They didn't take the battery apart ?

Yes, sexy battery (yes they said sexy)

They didn't take it apart.
Apart as in I want to see the insides of the battery. The cells and the safety shut down circuits. :-)
Who made the battery, Did no 7 inspect it.. all that good stuff.
New ones are only $129. :-)

How much are the new batteries?

Most Apple batteries are $129 and tax from Apple. The Air battery is $129 (and tax) which will include installation.

Since it's so easy to replace it, a lot of people will want to DITs. I'm betting that Apple won't be selling that battery. Maybe buy the time anybody needs one, OWC and others will have a kit.

I forgot to pick up a set of OWC's mini-drivers (lol) while at MWSF. $10, a great deal of the most often needed sizes and types.

No photos. This is what is says on their website:

"Ah, shit. The Air technically belongs to Apple, so we're not supposed to open it up. But take my word for it, it was easy to take apart, the battery is easy to swap, and the insides are gorgeous. For the time being, we're pulling the photos, but nothing is gonna stop us from running em later. We'll repost when we get our own units."

The more I read about the MBA the more I am wanting one. Hope to see it soon. People keep talking about it not being a desk top replacement, well, I have been using my Pismo as a desktop replace for 8 years! I haven't used a desktop since the LC III, mid '90's I think it was. So, for me, the MBA could definitely work for me. Just a little too expensive now. I need the light weight and size because of much international travel, don't watch movies on my Macs, don't do video editing, etc. This could very well be my next Mac; just have to wait for the price to drop... and the account to rise.
