I think the 896HD has the ability to set up mixing and routing preferences (like, say, channels 1+2 go to ADAT 1, or something) and it can remember that when disconnected from the computer.
If you're doing live sound, you'll either have to mix in software or you need to upgrade to a mixer with direct outputs. (inserts could also be used, with the right cable).
The 896 is definitely better than the 8pre. Sure, the 8pre is smaller, looks shinier, but the 896 still has loads more potential to it for the same price. And in case you're wondering, I'm now using my 896 with my Mac Pro and Logic 8.
