iN-laws new iMac...
#1
while Tiger (the golfer, not the Mac OS) was kicking butt at Torrey Pines, bro & sis-in-law just got 24" Al iMac at UTC Apple Store up the street. replaces 5 y.o. Fry's "custom" windoze box that pretty much imploded a couple of weeks ago. their daughter (our niece) has G5 iMac, and I've given them a few other Macs over the years. they bought a 6400 (IIRC?) back when, as their only previous, bought-new Mac, and they got a clunker, but now were ready to switch back. having them upgrade to 4GB RAM on their own, and get 750GB external HD. nice to have them on the right side of the fence again... can't wait to spend Super Bowl weekend getting their iChat video working... probably gotta get their email set up tomorrow night, unless they skip work, and I get stuck doing it during the day (or please, their local nephew helps out)... our 20" C2D white iMac is envious. in-laws considered MB/MBP + external monitor, kb, etc., until they did the math and saw the 24" iMac up close and personal. monitor from XP system is/was CRT to help the math.

if their old XP install disc was was SP1, can they use it w/ Bootcamp/VMware/Parallels? or does it have to be built out to SP2 on another HD before trying to transfer? bro-in-law didn't have install discs handy when we spoke, but remembers lots of "updates" to XP, but wasn't sure if store bought XP Pro was SP1 or 2...

Bootcamp needs an XP SP2 installer disc.

parallels & fusion do not

if you both have leopard, start the "screen sharing" and do a bunch of stuff remotely

Do a Google search - IIRC, there's a way to modify the XP install disc so that it works.

If you google "slipstream sp2" you'll get lots of sites with instructions on how to create an SP2 install disc. This is the one that I used. I haven't tried it yet with Bootcamp, but it worked fine with reinstalling XP on my Windows computer. It saves a lot of time and hassle doing upgrades.

Thanks for the link... looks kinda imposing... can they "borrow" a SP2 disc and just use the install code from the retail version they bought? also, their old XP box came w/ XP home, so they have 2#'s, as they bought a full install of XP Pro at the time... will find out in evening if it's SP1 or 2, but since it was awhile back, I'm thinking SP1 was most likely...

Making the Slipstream disc wasn't that big a deal, but if you are not familiar with the Windows programs, then I guess it might be little intimidating. I don't know about using another XP SP2 install disc with your install code, but don't see why that wouldn't work.
