Just what IS the iphone ipod touch screen made of?
#1
Elsewhere on the 'net, someone is moaning about the fact his new iphone's screen got scratched while it was in his pocket. He claims that it shouldn't have gotten scratched since the screen is supposedly made out of quartz and is supposed to be virtually scratch proof.

I personally think he's smoking crack. I've been googling for the past half hr (and looked at Apple's site) but I can't seem to find what substance the screen is made of!

Anyone know or have a link to where I can find the answer to this?

I have no idea, but I have only one small scratch in my iPhone screen and it took a diamond ring to do it. Keys, coins, etc. haven't caused any problems. It took something hard and sharp to scratch his phone. It didn't scratch just sitting in his pocket.

It's an alloy composed of equal amounts unobtainium and realitydistortionfieldium, both of which are only creatable in the secret Cupertino atom smasher buried kilometers beneath 1 Infinity Loop.

yeah C(-)ris, that's what I thought. I'm sure he probably dropped it on the sidewalk and wants Apple to fix it for free. I think I put him in his place because he's really shut up now. I wasn't trying to be harsh but once I started asking for specifics like "what else was in your pocket," and started posting links to relevant info, he got pretty quiet.

All the references I've seen mention: optical-quality glass (tempered)

Funny you should mention that, lipskidder - someone just mentioned that (ewww).

I've dropped my iPhone on the driveway a couple of times (said some neat swear words too) and the screen is still gorgeous. The rest of the cast has a few scuffs and scratches on it, as can be expected from normal use.

I haven't seen any reference citing any authority, just supposition.

There are various grades of glass that are stronger than others, and tempering can help that some.

I've never seen *anything* stating that it's screen is made of quartz or sapphire, two common choices for scratch-free transparent surfaces.

I don't find "optical glass" significantly scratch resistant, just more so than any form of plastic I've seen used in lenses.

But the guy is still nuts. The screen is very resistant to scratching, but there's *nothing* in Apple's warranty or description inferring that the screen won't scratch.

I just put a bodyguardz wrap on my 'Phone, and hated to cover the display. The bare display is *gorgeous*.

I couldn't agree more, RAMd®d. For what it's worth, I did continue to google yesterday and I found some article/review of the iphone screen & it indicated it was made out of glass & that it was pretty rugged. That's the closest I could get to some "official" word on what the screen's made of.

Here are a couple of links I found that have references to what the screen's made of:
