I've been through it twice as a seller and prevailed both times.
I am always very meticulous with my auction listings, providing detailed descriptions and pictures, including noting any flaws. I also have very clear terms stated in my auctions regarding conditions for returns if available etc... I keep all email correspondence with buyers. The biggest problem I see with the system is that you are very limited in space for your reply's to PayPal, IIRC it's 500 words, so you need to be succinct. Of course my winning the dispute didn't keep one of the buyers from leaving me a negative feedback which eBay refuses to remove because it "does not meet any of the specified criteria for removal".

I had a dispute (as a seller) that PayPal eventually resolved in my favor, but I was uncomfortable with the entire process, and the cloaking (my perception) of the entire process by them.
I felt like I was kept in the dark, until they finally ruled in my favor. In the interim, I kept getting collections calls because my balance was less than zero, and they wanted me to bring it up to zero. I kept telling tham that i was awaiting a dispute resolution, and they kept calling and threatening to cancel my account. Wasn't fun... Cary

I've only been ripped once using ebay/paypal. I was a bidder and the item was never sent. I filed a complaint and request for refund. I provided as much detail as possible and left little chance that the guy was gonna get away with it. I think the default claim investigation takes 30 days. After that, not only was a refund provided but a few days later as a sort of "We're sorry for the ordeal, please continue to trust us" type of thing, they gave me a coupon code worth the same amount that I was originally ripped of for. Had to use it within 3 months, I think. All in all, it was a slight hassle but I made out.

Currently fighting with them now. 17" MBP turned out to be stolen. Have turned it over to local PD. PayPal has credited me $200 (still almost $1500 due me). As mentioned; arcane process. Seems entirely arbitrary in favor of PP. Since I'm in NY and they're not, I can't just go to my local Small Claims Court. Leaving a very bad taste in my mouth.

Won an auction on ebay.
I was sent an empty box. complained to ebay. was told to go fish. Complained to pay pal. told to go fish. Complained to my credit card company. they told pay pal to give me my fish back. I would never use pay pal without using a credit card |
