The most intense thing a user can do to a drive is zero it, whether once or a hundred times.
A low-level format can only be done by the manufacturer.
I have no idea what Ps means by "vigorously flushing" a file.
One can erase a drive or zero a drive. I'm not sure how vigorously applies to any of that.

Sorry; to clarify, I erased the new backup w/DU, then I trashed the noted bluetooth file that was still on the source drive ("w/extreme prejudice").
When I erase using DU, choosing the format for the drive, that's as much formatting as needs to be done, right?
In a little while, I'll check to make sure the source drive (orig one in the G4) is also jumpered to cable select.
Also, the source drive is in the rear carrier as it originally came from Apple, and the new drive I put into the front carrier, thinking it would be better to keep a little more heat off the old orig drive. The front carrier holds drives horizontally- can it make a diff which side of the drive is facing up?
ps. I have no idea how that smiley got in that top paragraph, but it's appropriate.

What OS? What G4? Start up from a different startup disk and "Repair Disk" on the disk you want to clone.Try the clone with the drive in the second level of the rear carrier or to an external connection if possible, and make sure both drives are jumpered correctly.

The smilie is a by-product of the end parenthesis and any other adjacent punctuation. I call it a bug, some call it a feature.

Ok. Now all is good (I think) . I moved the new drive to the rear carrier, erased it, and then cloned the source drive again, this time w/DU (restore function). So far, so good. Permissions repair ran ok on it, and no more funky cycling sound.
one oddity though: After repairing perms, I then hit Verify Disk in DU. It said "Could not unmount the drive". Should that concern me?
