Among the Bush administration's final environmental legacies will be a decision to exempt perchlorate, a known neurotoxin found at unsafe levels in the drinking water of millions of Americans, from federal regulation.

The ruling, proposed by the Environmental Protection Agency in October, was supposed to be formalized on Monday. That deadline passed, but the agency expects to announce its decision by the year's end, before president-elect Barack Obama takes office. It could take years to reverse.

The latest science from The American Thyroid Association claims the CDC testing was [faulty].

With all the principals involved citing just the science that affirms thier position this whole system of checks and balances based on some theoretically safe limit is absurd.

Spending the resources directly on minimizing the non-naturally occuring iodine inhibiter makes more sense. Give a cuouple million less to Lutz. :-)

A couple million? Mulitply that by about 10,000. During low summer flow rates, the entire flow of the Colorado River sometimes qualifies as hazardous waste due to Perchlorate contamination. This is one of the biggest sources of drinking water for Los Angeles. A 1992 estimate to clean up one site near Sacramento was $1 Billion.
