Entourage (the app, not the TV show)
#1
Okay, the company where I work has just changed over to Entourage for their mail and calendar program. We even had a two-hour training session on it to become familiar with how we'll be using it there. It's the first time I've really checked it out and it seems like a decent program. While I do have it at home, I have purposely avoided using it because I didn't really want another Microsoft app mucking up my Mac (silly, yeah). I've also just recently decided to start weaning myself off Palm and have started using iCal, syncing it with Google calendar using BusySync. That's worked out very well, but my trial is about to run out. So before I go ahead and pay for BusySync, I'm trying to decide if I ought to give Entourage a try. I'm already used to the email part of it using it at work, but I haven't played around with the calendar or contacts. I haven't even completely switched my contacts from Palm Desktop to Address Book, so if I'm going to switch, this would be as good a time as any. But that's a big "if".

So for those who have used (or do use) Entourage, in your opinion, how does it compare with the Mail/Address Book/iCal combo? Is Entourage a fairly stable app or are there quirks that drive you batty? What's the downside, if any? Thanks.

I haven't had any issues when I've used Entourage. That being said though, I don't use it much as I don't think it will sync with the iPhone. I'm not positive on this though as I haven't really investigated it.

I finally did a little research. It appears that you can sync Entourage with the iPhone. You have to set Entourage up to sync with iCal and Address Book.

Can you be more specific about the method? I haven't considered an iPhone (currently using a Palm Treo) because I understood that it didn't allow syncing with Entourage.

Also, haven't upgraded Office because I understood that it too didn't allow syncing with my Treo. Is that incorrect?

Thanks for any info.

I've used it for years and haven't had any issues. I go back and forth between it, Outlook, and Konqueror(?) (all with Exchange)

onthedownlow, I'm referring only to being reluctant to do the upgrade from Office Mac 2004, which is what I've used for years.

As I understand it the recently released newer version doesn't allow the syncing with my Treo that I currently do without any problem, but I could be misinformed about this. This is what my question refers to.

I'm not sure what you were referring to when you say that you've been using "it" for years, since Office 2008 for Mac hasn't been available for years.

I am a big Entourage fan. I use it for both work and personal email. I got hooked on Claris Emailer back in the mid-'90s (the grandfather of Entourage). After Apple unwisely killed Claris Emailer, I read that M$ hired their team to create Entourage. Now normally I also despise the Redmond offerings (I still hate Turd), but I gave them a pass on Entourage b/c they hired unemployed Apple engineers. That, and the program never gives me any guff.

It has worked out great for me for nearly 10 years now. I've been on the 2008 Office version for the past 6 months or so. I tried Mail several years back but didn't much care for it. It was somewhat unstable then. Now I hear it is good. But I'm happy with Entourage, so there's no real reason for me to switch. It just works.

Also plays nice with my iPhone. Basically, I use my phone to check email if I'm gonna be away from the office. The messages are left on the server so I can also get them when I get home via my MacBook. I don't have syncing set up b/c it's not worth it for me on the phone as I only use it for email about once or twice a month. I do have it set to sync my Entourage & iCal actions and contacts and they come up fine on my iPhone.

I haven't really noticed any quirks or instability. I do need to cull down the 5,000 or so emails in my inbox, though...as every once in a while I have to do a rebuild (no biggie, a few buttons and the program does all the work). Contacts work fine, calendar works fine, no complaints here. I have never had a catastrophic incident in nearly 10 years of using Entourage. That is saying a lot.

One caveat: I think older versions of Entourage (v. X, not sure about 2004) had a 2gb data limit. I don't think that is the case any longer, or I would be in serious trouble!

I don't know SteveO, I like Entourage (2004) features way more than any other Calendar/Contact/eMail app for Mac, but it crashes all the time lately. Yes, I have done all the upgrades and rebuilt, but nothing helps.

I'd still like to know if version 2008 would work better and also allow me to sync my calendar and contacts with my Treo.

Anyone?

Work better: I can't remember ever having any serious issues with 2008 as I think I mentioned in some form above. With treo: try this, looks like there are some workarounds:

SteveO, I've looked at one forum or blog after another, where the Entourage syncing issue was discussed, and the consensus was, "it doesn't work."

Oh well…sigh!
