USB Hub Power Question
#1
I have a D-Link DUB-H7 seven port USB 2.0 hub connected to my 24" iMac. I have six of the seven ports in use with two hard disks, a scanner, a printer, and a couple of other low power things connected. Whan I connected in my new WD My Passport drive I got a message that there was too much current draw and the Passport was downed. Can this be overcome by using a higher amperage power cube of the same voltage and polarity? Are there high amperage USB hubs available?

look for a hub w/ discrete power for each port. not sure about the D-Link. unfortunately w/ a hub, you're not going to get discrete USB 2.0 speed across all ports, as there's only one USB2 pipe back to the computer, so bandwidth will be shared amongst the in use devices. w/o discrete power for each port, your bigger brick theory is a "maybe".

I don't know if that would work.

I wouldn't go that route myself. I'd connect a second powered USB hub.

Are you using all the ports on the back of the iMac?
The 2 on the wired Keyboard?

I'd second what Buzz and testcase said...that's a lot of devices.

I'd move all the HDs over to Firewire if possible. USB isn't the greatest for those.

once again, FW is 18 VA available at the port, USB 2 is only 10 VA.
