Shuffle on off ! Found two dead gen I shuffles in the junk drawer

I wondered what happened to those little beasties, but we found' em cleaning out a junk drawer. They're dead, Jim. No charge, no lights, no reset. Just sad little white rectangles of plastic. Obviously out of warranty.

So- what to do ?

Cut 'em up for a frankenstinian Shuffle ? (Attach a lead acid battery and a 512M Seagate 5 1/4 inch hard drive)

Jewelry for the older Apple fangirls ?

Mail 'em to that guy in Cali ?

I don't plan on eating them though.

And, as an side, my son got the new gen shuffle with his birthday money. That is INSANELY SMALL ! I mean full on straightjacketed cwazy teeny weeny. But very smooth and metallically cool. It looks like a weird surgical device.

If you want them to work, I would look for something like the iLuv battery/cases. Or similar.

Not sure if anyone made an external battery pack that was built into the case. But iLuv made them for the 1G Nanos. 56 hours per charge easy. They were great. Still have mine.

So, an external USB battery should work.

I think you can also take them into your Apple Store and use them for a discount off new iPods (other AAPL product, too? not sure).

I believe I saw a take-apart for the 1st gens awhile back. Supposedly, you can trim around the usb connector with an exacto knife and slide out the guts and replace the battery, IIRC.

I may try that one day, when mine stops holding a charge.
