Picked up a Beige G3 ...
#1
It's city wide cleanup month here. Put whatever you want (almost) out on the street and
the city (or some scavenger) will haul it away for free ...

Well, this year, one of my neighbors put out a desktop G3-266 (Rev. 3 per the ROM).
Fully functional with what appears to be a pretty fresh OS9.1 install. Had a single
256MB low-profile DIMM, the 4MB video memory upgrade and the original 4GB drive
still installed.

Funny thing was, it was sitting right next to a Compaq Deskpro (866Mhz P3) that
was methodically stripped clean over just a few hours (only thing left was the metal
case).

It can still be a functional machine . . . as long as you are not in a hurry. But it is definitely very long in the tooth . . .

mick e's sister is now using his old Frankenbeige on a daily basis for everyday stuff (surfing, iTunes, Office, etc). mick e maxed the RAM, found a ZIF from a Smurf and upclocked it to 466mhz, waved some chicken bones for a few days and was able to get Panther installed.

It was a fun project, but missus e thought 'ol mick had gone the way of the kookbiscuit for a while there.

Beige G3s are nice systems with OS 9. Can be a little cranky in OS X. Should make a decent Linux box as well.

Coincidentally, I just received a free Blue and White G3, 350Mhz REV 2, but it was stripped fairly clean. No RAM, hard drive, mounting brackets, or video card. Oddly, it did come with a Firewire/USB combo card and a USB 2.0 card. I sort of like the Beige G3 better as an OS 9 Mac, but the Blue and White is much easier to get OS X running reliably.

Of course, a curb side Sawtooth would be preferable, but beggars cannot be choosers.

I've wanted to try Linux on one of these ... any suggestions?

Are there any that will boot from CD?

I picked up a 266 rev 3 with a new 40 gig maxtor HD, maxed out ram, a 2 port USB card and a 3 port firewire card plus a 14 inch apple monitor for 5 dollars on ebay last winter. It was listed as local pickup only so noone was bidding I guess. Good deal since I had an original AV card with the DVD decoder and a 300 zif to add to it. I put it all in a PC case, lighted fans, etc., with a Liteon combo drive and running OS9 on one partition and 10.2.8 on the other. It plays DVDs and can do light work while I or my wife work on other things in the computer room. It is hooked to a 15 in apple AV monitor with built in speakers so it looks and sounds preaty good, works as an itunes jukebox as well. (the 15 in was a freebie along with a 6360 that also works but is currently collecting dust)
We have another rev 1 that now has the 266 zif and a standard AV card that I have set up to use our nest box cameras for the birds ( though that is still a work in progress). Nothing wrong with an old beige as long as you only expect what is reasonable. Have fun with the foundling.
