Do You Really Need A Mac Pro or Will An iMac Do The Job?
#11
I don't make a living with my mac, but I had a dual 2.0 G5, and I first tried to replace it with a 24" iMac (the last one before the AL models). I was told replacing the hard drive was possible, but not easy. But I had 4 HD's in my G5 (and external backups for all of them). Trying to transition to a slew of externals to hold 4.5TB of disk space and another 4.5TB of backup was painful.

I got the iMac for $800 on CL, which was a great deal. The screen was awesome, and I already had another 24" LCD to pair with it. But then I saw a then-current Mac Pro on CL for $1,000. I was lucky enough to grab that. Sold the iMac for $1,000. I miss the screen of the iMac, and the fact that I didn't bump my knees on the tower. But I love my Mac Pro and have no plans on getting another iMac any time soon.

I didn't get a Mac Pro because I needed it. I got one because I wanted it.

It's that simple.

The Nehalem Mac Pros show double the cores due to HyperThreading. 8 real + 8 virtual cores.
