Yeah, the way the schmucks calculated it was deliberately skewed. They took all of the benefits for all workers, present and retired, and pro-rated it across the range of present low-wage employees to make their compensation seem greater. The story was then taken up by the auto-makers without criticism because it made them appear more sympathetic.

'Interesting to see how a dumb lie becomes "common knowledge."

During one of our negotiations that went to a PEB, Presidential
Emergency Board, the company Lobbyist said we weren't anything but,
"a bunch of shadetree mechanics making $75/hr". At that time I think
our hourly wage was around $18/hr. Even with benefits it wasn't
anywhere near that.

Don't believe everything you hear.
