Fabric Protection for a New Sofa?
#1
I just bought a new sofa and the sales guy asked if we wanted to spend an additional $75 for Teflon fabric protection. I declined, but now I wonder if there is any merit to this. The sofa is synthetic fiber and has a fairly dark, two-toned color that I think would hide stains fairly well. Would purchasing the protection be worth it?

I probably would. One of the advantages to a protective coating is that it often keeps liquids from soaking in - think beading up on the surface to give you a chance to wipe up the spill. The option, of course (besides leaving it untreated), is to spray it yourself in its most vulnerable areas with ScotchGuard. I've done that, too, on pieces that I've reupolstered myself. I'm sure it provides about the same amount of protection, but your finger sure can get sore from that much spraying, and it also has to be done outdoors. $75 isn't a ridiculous amount, and it would be cheap insurance. This is my opinion only, and I'm sure you'll hear from others who tell you not to waste your money. Smile To each his own.

Yes. It's worth it.

I regret not having it done on my couch.

Many years ago, Amway had a spray on waterproofing that worked very well on fabrics. Don't know if they still have it.

Even if they did, i'd recommend finding an eequivilant from someone else.

Thanks to all who responded! I am reminded of a childhood friend whose mother kept plastic coverings on all her furniture and forbid us to even go into the living room. She didn't need no fabric protection!
