sometimes that whole "To Protect and to Serve" interferes with their leisure time. That and Mayor Daly having them harrass every law abiding gun owner, at the expense of actually stopping real criminals who have already broken the law.

Note in this case the reason the police went after it was the identification of a known drug dealer and a wanted person in the presence of the stolen computer. Essentially the police now had legal surveillance through the software without having to get a warrant.

The recovery of the Mac was incidental to the real police goals.

Where are the theif's rights? This should be inadmissible without a warrant. Give it time...they'll plug this loophole. :judge:

The laptop was the property of a private citizen, not an agent of the police. So no warrant required by the police. In a way, not unlike if someone had stolen a camera, taken pictures, and then the camera was recovered. The owner of the camera could do anything they wanted to do with pictures found in the camera, including turn them over to the police.

Note that it did not happen in the U.S.

Among other things, in the U.S. the kid probably wouldn't have gotten his laptop back.

Municipalities usually find an excuse to snag the good stuff for auction under the premise that it was used or involved in the commission of a crime. Then instead of being auctioned, it'd somehow end up on a cop's desk at home.

I'm waiting for one of those recovery apps to snap pics of THAT event.
