follow-up to the bad drive/enclosure question
#1
So after continued frustration with an external drive (earlier thread), I decided to buy one of those drive adapter thingies. This morning I used it to transfer a couple of hundred gigs onto another external drive. That went flawlessly, which leads me to believe that the problem was with the other enclosure, rather than the drive itself. Or should I not jump to that conclusion? I guess I'm wondering if it's worth buying another enclosure to put this (possibly) still good older drive to use. Do you think it's safe to assume that the drive itself is good? Any way to know for certain?

sounds like it was the enclosure.

Yes. Remove the cover of the drive, check to see that the arm (heads) moves freely above the surface
of the platters, and when powered up, does as you THINK it is doing, now that you can see it.

Once you've done that, you'll know for sure if it was good or bad.

Then throw it away, because now it's bad.
