Opinions on Lightscribe DVD burners?
#11
To those of you who haven't figured it out yet, even though Baby Tats explained it quite clearly.

When pRon quoted me it said in the quote, "USER IGNORED".
Go ahead and look at the quote, you'll see it now.

While having a LightScribe would be cool from a novelty standpoint, I think I'll stick with my R200. Would much rather have a full color photo/image than grayscale.

I'm with Golfer, plus the cost of the media & the time the burner is tied up doing the label. Then there's the issue of firmware upgrades. Pioneer & NEC have a better "users" support base.

....plus, I won't buy from:

The LightScribe labels are actually more eye catching then color labels, waterproof, and probably cheaper than a generic disk plus ink.

Also, I have more than one burner.

IMO I think the lightscribe looks more professional. I would rather do something like this than an inkjet print for client disks. Other than that O would use regular DVD media for archiving.

I ran the #s, using TaiYo discs & generic ink in my R200, it's still less per disc than the best price I could find on LS discs. Never had a problem with water on my discs either. Krylon Clear spray would fix that if ever needed. I guess beauty is in the eye of the beholder ::o

I too, have more than one burner. Once LS discs come down in price & Linux support is available, I might put a LS burner in my Dull Linux box.

Sorry to have deviated from the discussion. Yes, yes, Baby Tats explained it all clearly. New.Dad, I get no indication.

We sell a fair number of LS DVD burners at our store, but rarely BECAUSE if it's ability to do lightscribe "engraving."

The effect is definitely different from the print-on DVDs (aka "R200 effect"), and to some looks more professional, but I think the difference is simply a matter of tone and taste.

Buying a lightscribe drive gives you the best of both worlds -- it works fine with "regular" or print-on DVDs (as far as burning goes), or you can buy LS discs and do something neat with that.
