strange oil drain plug
#11
Racer X, I think the problem is that he doesnt know when it was damaged and replaced with that plug.

Racer's point is-- on point.

*IF* the oil was changed at a shop after that poor man's repair was made, the subsequent shop should have at least made mention, if not follow Racer's suggestion. It wouldn't have made any difference what wurm new when, if the shop doing the subsequent repair had done what they should have.

If wurm had taken the car to the same shop every time, it wouldn't make any difference when it happened if wurm found it when he did the change.

Unfortunately, it would still boil down to a He Said/They Said, if the shop didn't want to own up to it.

Somebody volunteered to change the oil on my old GoldWing and torqued the drain plug super tight. Of course when I removed it, so of the aluminum pan's threads came with it. When I replaced it, it leaked signifcantly, but not dangerously fast. I was able to get home, pull the pan, and have it heli-coiled, very cheaply, for which I was reimbursed.

It didn't leak a drop, as should be expected of a Honda vehicle.

Seems worth treating it as though the last mechanic who changed the oil was the one who stripped the threads and installed the temp.

Try going back to him to complain since the only plausible reason for him to not tell you about the temp is to avoid taking responsibility for doing the damage...

Sounds like a good episode of People's Court...

If they didn't make note of the non-standard and bastardized drain plug, as far as I am concerned they took "ownership" of the problem. That was the reasoning behind the policy at Jiffy Lube. We would make note in the computer that service was declined, and print out a no charge receipt that they could take back to the last guy who touched the car. First thing we would do would be to check for pan damage, leaks and odd drain plugs. This was done without any tools in your hand. No way the plug was our problem that way.
