Just downloaded a video labeled .mkv and tried running it on both OSX Player and VLC to no avail. Any ideas what this file is and which player will play the video?
Thanks

MKV is a Matroska file. It's a "container" format often used to distribute high quality video.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Matroska There's no guaranty because I have no idea what the codecs are for that file, but mkv files usually play in VLC or mPlayer. You might have better luck decoding it if you've got Perian installed. http://perian.org/

Thanks Doc, it seems that I did get it to work in VLC and the Perian thing let it work in QT
BUT it's my computer that's not up to the task of handling the 720p file! Arrgh!

See if you can find a DivX AVI version of the video.

every .mkv file I have played was very processor intensive. It isn't just because yours is 720P.
I can transcode an .mp4 avi in toast to a DVD at about 50% longer than the file length speed. But an .mp4 inside an .mkv file takes about 5x time.

I usually play mkv files with DiVX player
