From Wikipedia , "Metadata is data about data".
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Metadata For example you might have a JPEG photo that is just data, but there are also a bunch of attributes attached to it describing things like what model camera took the picture, the exposure settings and the like.

It's all data.
Meta data are mostly the data that the machines need to know about the data you care about. That JPEG of your daughter's wedding day (taken on the day of your daughter's wedding) is important to you, while the JPEG header information is important to any program processing it.
