1. I downloaded the 64 bit version, hoping to see some speed increase, but when it opens, it looks for a 64 bit version of VLC (which apparently is non-existant at this time) and offers to let me try the rip without it (which is fine as my DVDs are not copy-protected but recordings from TMC) . However, when I make that choice it sends me to the VLC web site and does not enter the chosen DVD as a source. Try to set the source through the menu, etc all gives the same response. Si I DL-ed the 32 bit version and VLC but I wonder why it won't try to rip the DVD in the 64 bit app?
2. From what I've gleaned from the web, there is no way to have CC optional using HB - it has to be off or burned into the image. Is that correct? If there's a way to save CCs and use them or not when viewing, I'd appreciate a link.
3. OK- I lied - here's one last question - more about ATV than HB. I ripped a LOOOONG movie (the 4 Horsemen of the Apocalypse - silent version from the 1920s). The rip was successful (apparently, as it plays in QT) but iTunes will not add it to the library - no error message, just doesn't do anything when it's chosen. The file size is 6.6GB, mp4. Is there some arbitrary file size limit in iTunes?

1) Is VLC located in /Applications? And not in a subfolder? HandBrake can only see VLC when it's in /Applications.
2) Correct. The file container doesn't support it.
3) I want to say it's 4GB, but that may no longer be true.

Sounds wrong, actually. But I've never used the "soft" subtitles mentioned here, http://trac.handbrake.fr/wiki/Subtitles

1 - There is a 64-bit beta version of VLC. A little Topeka search may find it.
2 - I don't know the answer to this, and I've tried. For example, I don't have a successful "Hunt for Red October" rip because the first ten minutes are in Russian and I can't figure out how to get the subtitles.
3 - deckeda's answer sounds plausible to me.

The situation with VLC for OS X currently isn't good. They have no active OS X development. Only version 1.02 is available in 64-bit (scroll down to see link), and isn't considered stable. You'll need the 32-bit version of HandBrake if you rely on VLC 1.05.
RipIt doesn't cost much and works pretty well as a ripper.

Again, WRONG. My coffee was a dud this morning.
You have to checkmark "Large file size." It's on the main dialog, along with Web optimized and iPod 5G support under Output settings.

Sorry to be late responding to your comments, and THANKS! - I was having an Apple Genius replace optical drives in both my MBP and my Mini. He wasn't surprised I fried them doing as many rips as I have, but said he'll happily keep on replacing them as long as I'm in warranty. I told him I'm going to use external drives for ripping from now on.
Anyway, I didn't have any copy of VLC in the Applications folder - 32 OR 64 bit, but the dialog said "try anyway," so I thought it would. It didn't. Stupid dialog. I went to 32 bit and installed VLC 1.05.
Regarding the movie - it's already ripped and the ripped size is 6.6GB. Apple TV, when I select it under Add to Library, just ignores it - no error message, no copied file.
I did read the link earlier - was hoping someone would tell me they tried it and it worked. Since most of my DVDs are recordings off TV, CCs aren't there anyway, so it's not enough of a biggie to me to spend the time making multiple rips to see if it works - I still have hundreds of DVDs to go. (Yeah, it sounds like I'm lazy and, I am. No sense wasting time to confirm something someone else already did.)

I think your goose is cooked unless you transcode it again with that checkmark. If using the AppleTV preset, I think it's on by default, and doesn't hurt anything if left on for small files (I don't think.)
Another thing regarding the lifespan of any optical drive: get a dedicated ripper app like RipIt (or MacTheRipper if you can stomach the donation and license hoops, which are truly like no other experience.)
Doing it all in one step takes longer because you can't queue up transcode jobs without multiple optical drives going. And it kills them faster (I'd wager) because they're frequently spinning up, spinning down, accessing data, and so on.
But with a ripper, you start it and the optical drive is mostly cruising at the same pace for 15-30 minutes and then it's done. PLUS you can take the opportunity to test your ripped VIDEO_TS folder within DVD Player to make sure you got what you came for before transcoding. Get a FireWire drive, not USB.
