Thanks, I think the eBay AP card for $21 shipped is the obvious solution.
I bought this Asus when I was having connectivity problems at home and chose it partially because it could be flashed to DD-WRT, but my troubles resolved with a new phone jack. Will try it as her router in stock configuration.
