damn. Macbook Pro logic board (GPU) crapped out again

Paid $300 to have my MBP (Core Duo) repaired not too long ago... now the graphics corruption has returned, the part is well out of its 30-day warranty, and i don't have money for another repair or a replacement Macbook / Pro.

This is what it looks like while booted from an Apple Service Diagnostic disc:



I used SMC control to ramp the fans up. Failed while asleep overnight - worked fine watching a movie rented from iTunes.

You had a bad fix. I had my 2.16 MBP ATI x1600 w/video artifacts fixed under Applecare last August just before the Applecare expired. Replaced logic board and it has worked fine since. When not mobile it Folds 24/7. Mine had a 90 day warranty on the fix because Applecare expired 2 days after I initially brought it in. Good thing, too, because the provider didn't get the fix right for 3 months - heat sink issues.

out of warranty repairs from Apple are not covered for 1 year.
besides, it was over a year ago (already!)

Apple often stands behind their work outside of the warranty period. It's probably worth scheduling an appointment with a "genius," explaining that Apple has already replaced the board once and begging for a free replacement.

I'd give Customer Relations a call - you're approaching 'lemon' status with this MBP. Plead your case nicely and you might get one of those new MBPs you were lamenting about in my thread a few days ago.

The X1600 configuration on the late 2006 MacBooks and iMacs is dodgy and a replacement, which will only have a limited warranty, will likely fail in time as well, unless you religiously keep the computer running a lot cooler than intended. Otherwise the continuous exposure to the fairly intense heat will eventually damage the new processors. Thus this has to be done before the damage to the hardware is done. Once you have issues it's too late. Better spend your money on a new machine. Apple are unlikely to help you with this issue. They haven't helped any of the other hundreds (if not thousands) of people affected by the faulty X1600 GPUs. They know very well that the configuration on these MacBooks and iMacs is bad but it would cost them too much to fix it. Cheaper to ignore the matter, even if you're likely to lose a few customers over it. I did a Google using the words X1600 and petition. Maybe you should do the same.
