If you were into photography, you'd need a CF slot.

The top 10 professional SLRs all take CF cards, 'tho some of them do take SD or other types of flash card as well.

...And I connect my prosumer Canon (which does use SD cards) via USB. It's faster that way.
and you can get a flush fit CF card adapter that a SD card plugs into. So a CF or real express card slot are needed on a MB PRO. Don't need the pro features, get a MB or MB Air.

Even if you aren't into photography an SD card is just a storage medium. I posted on the older thread that it could be used in place of a flash drive.

I got an MBP because I need a 15" screen. I would've gotten an MB if it came with a 15" screen.

2 USB and bring back the ExpressCard slot.

I think the real question should be: What are you willing to give up for the third or fourth USB port? It's not like Apple is just being mean not giving it to us, there physically isn't room on the 13" and 15". You could trade the Ethernet port, the firewire port, have a smaller battery, or lose the optical drive and get a whole slew of new ports, or do you just want a physically bigger, uglier machine with lots of ports?

I vote for three and please make sure that they are all full power level. I'm tried of Apple having underpowered usb ports. One of the ironies of having a single provider of both hardware and operating system is that you are stuck with whatever they provide. For better or worse, the Windows world has no shortage of different hardware variants to suit pretty much all customers. (ie: ruggized toughbooks, netbooks, etc)

One. My MBA has one and it works fine. If more needed then a hub. But 2 on a MBP 15" and three on a MBP 17" would be just fine.
