old GPS was stolen...

Do all the GPS devices allow you to avoid roadblocks ahead like the Tomtom? My stolen device (garmin nuvi) did not permit you to avoid roadblocks ahead, thus, if you were stuck in traffic and pulled out at the next exit, the damned thing wanted you to get back onto the same road. The single most useful feature of my tomtom one XL is this avoid roadblock feature.

Do any of the other GPS's do this?

how old, what model? My Nuvi 350 (? I am not 100% sure) has a "Detour" button that does exactly what you want; it is about 3 years old IIRC

That detour button was nearly useless...it essentially made me get off the next exit and get right back on. Quite useless...it was a garmin nuvia 650 IIRC.

i've had a garmin since 2004. the value of the detour really depends upon available option. if there's no route option that's going to make a difference, that's all you get. my old 2620 had options for detours of 5, 10, or 15 miles. if i knew how big the hold up was i could ask for one of those options.

i now have a 1490. there's simply a detour function but no option for how large a detour you're willing to make. this model comes with free lifetime traffic and once it did completely reroute me around a back up. did it save me anytime? who knows but it did feel better to be moving SOMEWHERE rather than sitting in a parking lot on the interstate. the few other times i checked for a detour it simply gave me the route i was already on; i assume that meant there were no faster options for getting to where i wanted to go.

the adjustable detour is one of the features i miss but overall i have been pleased with the Garmin 1490. plus, it has a big a** screen which is great for these middle aged eyes.

Without an adjustable detour button, I will not buy. Washington DC (where I almost always get killed on the way down to Florida) is the worst highway mess I've ever seen.

In NYC - tristate area, I will use the detour around 1-5 miles of traffic quite often. Thus, I don't need the traffic live time updates, I need the adjustable detour button.
