of course, she doesn't do online banking, but still...

Log in to her account and send all her friends some porn... with an ad for a porn site on it.

Then change her password so she can't get into the account...

Then her friends can explain what a password is for.


(and by the way, no.. I'm not serious... not really... maybe SOME sort of object lesson would be in order, but probably not to that extreme... if you like your MIL that is.).

She probably thinks that it's part of her email address—because it was given to her at the same time—and that she needs to give it to people so their emails will reach her. Try the analogy of a "key to her mailbox." Even if she's never lived in an apartment, she might see how that works.

I'm more inclined to think that she doesn't see the importance of her password because there's nothing of importance (to her) in her emails. I've seen that attitude with some of my consulting customers.
