Wife of Nobel Prize Winner under House Arrest
"Beijing, China (CNN) -- Liu Xia, the wife of Nobel Peace laureate and Chinese dissident Liu Xiaobo, remains under house arrest in Beijing and banned from talking to friends or media, his lawyer said."

Can someone please explain to me exactly HOW China has an 'open democratic society' ? Wake up, DuhMerica. This is a straight-on dictatorship.

Where do you come up with this stuff? China crushed the pro-democracy movement, remember. I think China's government is worthy of disgust. It's unfortunate that they seem to be taking over the world's economy.

I wish they would just scrap this sham. They should reserve the Nobel Peace prize for whoever makes a better dynamite.

Uhm... you DO realize that the Nobel Peace Prize is generally considered an 'apology', right ?
Excerpt from the Will of Alfred Nobel
"The whole of my remaining realizable estate shall be dealt with in the following way: the capital, invested in safe securities by my executors, shall constitute a fund, the interest on which shall be annually distributed in the form of prizes to those who, during the preceding year, shall have conferred the greatest benefit on mankind. The said interest shall be divided into five equal parts, which shall be apportioned as follows: one part to the person who shall have made the most important discovery or invention within the field of physics; one part to the person who shall have made the most important chemical discovery or improvement; one part to the person who shall have made the most important discovery within the domain of physiology or medicine; one part to the person who shall have produced in the field of literature the most outstanding work in an ideal direction; and one part to the person who shall have done the most or the best work for fraternity between nations, for the abolition or reduction of standing armies and for the holding and promotion of peace congresses. The prizes for physics and chemistry shall be awarded by the Swedish Academy of Sciences; that for physiology or medical works by the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm; that for literature by the Academy in Stockholm, and that for champions of peace by a committee of five persons to be elected by the Norwegian Storting. It is my express wish that in awarding the prizes no consideration be given to the nationality of the candidates, but that the most worthy shall receive the prize, whether he be Scandinavian or not.""

Care to explain how this statement has anything to do with the quote you posted? I don't see the connection at all.

The quote above is the actual terms under which the Prize is supposed to be awarded. It's a little attempt to place fact above opinionation.
The claims of China being a 'free state' is something I have heard from China apologists here and elsewhere. And, of course, is designed to produce commentary. In any case, anyone who believed that the government of China was in any way benign needs to look no further than Liu Xiabo.
Making policy with your head in his gullet, assuming that the dragon will not close his jaws upon your neck, is foolish.

I'd be interested in seeing that actual post.
I believe cbelt3's comment about the Peace Prize being an apology refers to Alfred Nobel, the inventor of TNT, being wracked with guilt over the death and destruction his invention caused. As a result he used the wealth that came of it to create the Peace Prize.

Me, too. I think I'd remember if someone had said something like that! Honestly, I didn't know that we had any "China apologists" here.

I've heard that all my life and haven't heard anything to dispute it.

Ah, now that makes sense. Cbelt3 didn't mention it and I had forgotten the Nobel/TNT link.
